Trelldom: Til Minne (2007) Review

The third release from Gaahl’s (the singer of Gorgoroth) side project, Trelldom, is way too ahead in quality from their previous album, Til et annet.... The music found in Til Minne is comparitively basic, old-school black metal, and is done quite well.
The highlight of this project is the presence of Gaahl’s vocals. Gaahl has a wide range of sounds, and he uses them so effectively that sometimes, you can’t even recognize him. With as numerous vocals layers as used here, some tracks end up with screaming, fixed over droning black metal riffs and pounding drums. From deranged shrieks, to clean chants, the tracks leave you no choice but to appreciate the utter brilliance and melody of Gaahl’s contribution.
Very militaristic and hateful, the music perfectly compliments the vocals. There are a lot of great tracks here, of which my favourite has to be “Vinternatti”. This is a great example of black metal at its finest. This is for fans of Burzum, Darkthrone, or basically old school Black Metal.
